Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to rename the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to the Dhyan Chanda Khel Ratna Award, images of the Param Vir Chakra Medal are falsely shared on social media as the Khel Ratna Award.

The Narendra Modi government announced on Friday that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest athletic award, will be renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
I have received many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.

Soon many social media users, including current and former Union ministers and many BJP leaders thanked the prime minister for the move.

India Today Anti-Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that many of these posts featured the image of Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor, rather than Khel Ratna.
Lots of internet users, including Journalists and Leader of the opposition parties, pointed out that the medal in the picture is actually from Param Vir Chakra and not from Khel Ratna.
Based on this, we searched Google for the original image of Param Vir Chakra and found the same image that was uploaded as Param Vir Chakra official website of the Minister of Defense as well as Indian Air Force.
A close look at these images on the government websites clearly shows that the image shared as that of Khel Ratna is in fact Param Vir Chakra.
We also have the original image of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on the official website of. found Ministry of Youth and Sport. Several images of this award are also available on the international stock image site. Getty Images.
These pictures also make it clear that the medal in the picture in question is not from Khel Ratna.
Hence, it is clear that the image in question is from Param Vir Chakra and not from Khel Ratna. With Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna recently renamed, we’ll have to wait and see what the new medal looks like.
