From Taliban to… Taliban: Chinese state media mocks US over its 20-year stint in Afghanistan

Chinese state media Xinhua News on Sunday teased the US about the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, pointing out that the US had left the country where it was 20 years ago.

Mocking the US, Xinhua News, in a three minute video shared on social media, said “If you feel like life is going nowhere, just think about it,” adding that Afghanistan’s regime is changing “from Taliban to … Taliban”.

“If you have the feeling that life is going nowhere, just think about it: With 4 US presidents, 20 years, $ 2 trillion, 2,300 soldier lives … the regime of Afghanistan is changing from Taliban to … Taliban”, Xinhua News titled the video on Twitter.

The host spoke in a sarcastic tone and similar background noises of US President Joe Biden saying “America is back” adding that “those words came true” this week.

“US troops rushed to evacuate when Taliban troops took control of the presidential palace,” the video read, prompting the anchor to compare it to the riots on Capitol Hill earlier this year.

The moderator went on to say that the US had started the war in Afghanistan “in the name of counter-terrorism”.

“Now let’s take a look [US’s] 20 years of efforts. The number of terrorist groups in Afghanistan has increased from single digits to over 20, ”she said.

“There are now more than 100,000 Afghan civilians killed or wounded and 11 million people left homeless. The war averaged $ 60 million a day, making it a greater loss than the Vietnam War,” she said.

The Taliban last week regained power in Afghanistan following the capture of Kabul, which led to the unprecedented collapse of the US-backed Ashraf Ghani government 20 years after it was ousted from the US following the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
