HIGHLIGHTS

  • Joe Roots hundreds saw him immediately Kevin Pietersen’s record of 23 test tons
  • Root has scores of 180 *, 33, 64, and 109 before that hundred
  • England hit 333 for 3 by 255 runs on Day 2 at the time of the Roots Century

England captain Joe Root scored his third hundred in the series and 23rd in test cricket on the second day of the ongoing third game against England at Headingley on Thursday. Root equaled Kevin Pietersen’s record on England’s all-time list as the hosts extended their lead to 250 at Leeds.

Root and Kevin Pietersen are now jointly second behind Alastair Cook, who scored 33 hundred in his playing career for England.

In the Hundreds, Root also took first place on the list of batsmen with the most centuries between India-England Tests. Rahul David, Sachin Tendulkar and Cook each had 7 hundreds ahead of Roots 8th place, while Mohammad Azahruddin and Kevin Pietersen each finished 6th.

After pooling India for a paltry 78, England’s top orders fired in unison to bring them to 333-3, a 255 run lead at the time of Roots 100.

His 139-year partnership with Malan ended in one fell swoop when Malan fell behind after a flowing 70.

Each of England’s four best batsmen stood out against India for half a century.

After the hosts resumed on 120 without a loss, Mohammed Shami made the breakthrough for the tourists when he pushed one through Rory Burns goal to hit the top of the stump.

Burns made 61 and was with Haseeb Hameed in a 135-run stand for England’s highest opening stand since Alastair Cook and Hameed played 180 against India in 2016.

Hameed made 68 before Ravindra Jadeja whirled one past his bat to hit the stump for his first wicket in the sailor-dominated series.

Reaching a century in each of the last two Tests, Root once again showed off his silky touch and played a few glorious rearfoot kicks that pushed the ball to the limit.

Playing his first Test in three years, Malan cut and drove elegantly before tickling Mohammed Siraj over to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

Malan was not initially disfellowshipped and Pant did not appeal. Siraj convinced India captain Virat Kohli to review the decision and UltraEdge confirmed that the batsman had trimmed the ball.
