Social activist Anna Hazare has threatened the Maharashtra government with public agitation if temples are not opened in the state. “If bars can be opened, why not temples?” he asked the state government.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maharashtra government has not yet allowed religious places of worship to be opened to the public.
Anna Hazare has urged the state government to open temples and urged people to take to the streets and agitate if this demand is not accepted.
CENTER RECOMMENDED RESTRICTIONS BEFORE THE SEASON
His request comes just a day after Central Health Minister wrote to the chief secretary of Maharashtra urged the state government to put in place appropriate Covid-19 restrictions to avoid a surge in cases during the Dahi Handi and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. This was done taking into account the possibility of a third wave of Covid.
On Saturday, The Prime Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, appealed To the citizens to be careful in the coming festive days and not to let their vigilance against Covid-19 fail.
BJP versus SHIV SENA
However, about ten days ago, the BJP targeted the Shiv Sena over the same issue. The party ruling at the center asked the Maharashtra government why it had not reopened temples across the state despite most other Covid restrictions being relaxed.
BJP member Ram Kadam had stated that the decision not to allow temples to reopen was tantamount to “clamming the voice of the Hindus”.
The former chief minister and BJP chief Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP was quoted by the Hindustan Times, “I don’t understand why temples cannot be reopened. I think temples will be less crowded than bars and shopping malls … The reopening of temples is not only necessary for religious reasons, but there is a large section of the population who depend on temples and related activities for a living is.”
In response, Shiv Sena spokesman Manisha Kayande said, “The government has now opened its activities as the livelihoods of thousands depend on it. It will also open temples, but not under pressure from them. “
