The center has approved all nine names recommended by the Supreme Court for appointment to the Supreme Court, which includes three female judges.
The college had the names of Chief Justice AS Oka and Judge BV Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court, Chief Justice Hima Kohli of the Telangana High Court, Chief Justice Vikram Nath of the Gujarat High Court, Sikkim Chief Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice CT Ravikumar. recommended by Kerala High Court, Judge MM Sundresh of Madras High Court, Judge Bela M. Trivedi of Gujarat High Court, and Senior Advocate PS Narasimha.
The current strength of the Supreme Court is 24. With nine judges, one judge will remain vacant at the Supreme Court.
Among the recommended names, Righteousness nagarathna could become the country’s first female chief judge for a little over a month – from September 25 to October 29, 2027.
The Supreme Court, established on January 26, 1950, has seen very few female judges since its inception and has appointed only eight female judges for the past 71+ years, starting with M. Fathima Beevi in 1989.
Who is Justice Nagarathna?
Justice Nagarathna was born on October 30, 1962 and is the daughter of the former CJI ES Venkataramiah. She enrolled as a lawyer in Bangalore on October 28, 1987, practicing in “Constitution, Commerce, Insurance and Services, etc.”
