England captain Joe Root reached his 21st testing century but India retained a slight upper hand in what promises to be an exciting final day of the opening testing on Sunday.

Root made 109 to get his side out of the doldrums, setting India a tough 209-run victory goal on the penultimate day of Saturday’s bowler-dominated competition.

Root had the highest score in his team’s first innings, a total of 183 points, and his century proved to be the foundation of England’s 303 in the second innings.

India were 52-1 at Stumpen and still needed 157 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-game series that marked the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle.

Rohit Sharma hit 12 after losing opening partner KL Rahul who made 26.

Cheteshwar Pujara hit three limits in his unbeaten 12th after an exciting day on the Trent Bridge.

Previously, Rishabh Pant spent a busy day behind the stumps after England resumed without loss on the 25th.

Mohammed Siraj drew the first blood and dismissed Rory Burns, who had stayed behind for 18.

Zak Crawley fell on the next over, forcing Jasprit Bumrah over to Pant, who dived right to catch the catch.

Root added 89 runs with opener Dom Sibley to shore up the innings.

Sibley got a lbw decision overturned but went off on 28 when his angled bat hit Bumrah’s swinging ball and Pant dived to the left to deftly bag the inside edge.

Jonny Bairstow made 30 before digging into the deep square and Shardul Thakur caught Dan Lawrence lbw for 25, but Root couldn’t deny his hundred.

The home captain suggested Mohammed Shami for a line to highlight his century and celebrated it by jumping, punching in the air, and bellowing.

Bumrah finished Roots 172-ball tap that included 14 boundaries and dismissed him with the second new ball.

Sam Curran’s airy 32 in order was the second highest score in England’s second innings.

Bumrah, claiming 5-64, sacked Curran and Stuart Broad in consecutive deliveries but was denied by James Anderson.
