India’s Shaili Singh wins silver in women’s long jump at U20 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi

Shaili Singh, a 17-year-old long jumper from Jhansi, won the silver medal in the women’s long jump at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi on Sunday. Shaili Singh, who trains at the Anju Bobby George Academy in Bengaluru, jumped to a new U20 national record of 6.59 m and won the silver medal.

18-year-old Maja Askag from Sweden won gold with a jump of 6.60 m, one centimeter better than the Indian in a pulsating final.

Shaili Singh, who has broken the national junior record several times, was back on Sunday. Trained by Bobby George, who supervised his station from the stands, Shaili jumped 6.34 m in her first two attempts, only to beat her previous personal best of 6.48 m in the grand finale on Sunday. It is noteworthy that it was Bobby George who trained his wife Anju for a World Championship medal in the women’s long jump in 2005.

Shaili Singh’s 6.59m jump will not count as her personal best considering the wind support in Nairobi during the final in the women’s long jump. Shaili looked thrilled when she hit the mark and led the field on the third attempt. However, after her final jump, she was downcast knowing she was within reach to win a gold medal.

Shaili Singh led the competition until Maia Aska, the junior European champion, jumped 6.60 m in her third attempt. Shaili couldn’t beat her best jump of 6.59 m in her last three attempts. It is noteworthy that Aska won gold in the women’s triple jump at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi last week.

17-year-old Shaili, named by Anjou Bobby George as one of the best medal candidates for India at major events, proved with a terrific show in Nairobi that her mentor was right. Shaili had overcome several personal hurdles in order to distinguish himself on an international level. The junior record holder was raised by a single mother who worked as a seamstress.

Shaili’s silver was also India’s 3rd medal at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi. At the beginning of the competition, the Indian Amit Khatri won silver in the men’s 10 km race. Khatri crossed the finish line with 42: 17.94 seconds behind Heristone Wanyoni from the host country, who won gold with a time of 42: 10.84 seconds. India also won bronze in the 4 x 400m mixed relay.

India’s 4 x 400m women’s relay hurt as it finished fourth in the final, which was also India’s last event at the U20 World Championships in Nairobi.
