Kerala relaxes Covid curbs, weekend lockdown only on Sundays

The Kerala government eased the Covid curbs in its new order on Wednesday, saying that the weekend lockdown will only be imposed on Sundays. The shops are also open every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sundays.

However, there will be no Sunday lock on August 15 and 22 due to Independence Day and Onam.

Health Secretary Veena George said it could triple lockdown in areas where the positivity is 10 per 1,000 of the population.

“We need to categorize areas by cases per 1,000 people,” she said.

The state government has also approved public events in open spaces with no more than 40 people, depending on the space available. Weddings and funerals can be held with a maximum of 20 people.

On the subject of vaccination, State Minister of Health Veena George said: “Our goal is to vaccinate the maximum population in a short period of time. However, this depends on the availability of vaccines through the center.
Our vaccination rate is well above the national average. “

“Hospital and ICU occupancy have decreased in the state these days, which means that the severity of the disease is decreasing,” said Veena George.

The Minister of Health also said the department is now assessing the effects of “breakthrough infections” and “reinfections” in humans.

“We are looking to see if people have a breakthrough vaccine infection (a COVID case that occurs in a fully vaccinated person) and re-infection (a person who is infected and recovered, reinfected),” she said.

The southern state reported 23,676 new Covid cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases of infection to 34,49,149, with the number of people who succumbed to the virus rising to 17,103 after 148 more deaths.
