The Taliban officially announced a ban on co-education in Afghanistan, said that rural men are not allowed to teach girls.
“Men are not allowed to teach girls,” said Taliban University Minister Shaikh Abdul Baqi Haqqani. Haqqani said all educational activities would take place under Sharia law.
At a large gathering in the Loya Jirga tent, Haqqani assured the people and all teachers of Afghanistan that the Taliban would try to develop the Afghan education system.
The statement comes one day after the appointment of Shaikh Abdul Baqi Haqqani as incumbent higher education minister in Afghanistan.
“The move has effectively deprived girls of higher education because universities cannot afford to offer different classes and there are not enough staff,” tweeted Afghan journalist Bashir Ahmad Gwakh.
Haqqani also has criticizes the current education system, said that it did not adhere to Islamic principles. “Any article against Islam in the education system will be removed,” the Independent quoted Haqqani as saying.
Last week, Taliban officials in the Afghan province of Herat ordered that girls should no longer sit in the same classes as boys at universities.
Taliban officials reportedly said there was “no justification or alternative for continuing co-education,” according to a report in Khaama News.
In Afghanistan women, who make up almost 50% of the total population, live in fear of the Return of the Taliban.
