Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Neeraj Chopra said he wanted to pursue the Olympic record in the men’s javelin final despite taking the gold medal on Saturday to rewrite the history books.

Neeraj Chopra joined Abhinav Bindra in the exclusive two-man roster after landing at the top in the men’s javelin final with a best attempt of 87.58m in the second throw, which was enough for him to take the lead land.

Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin 87.03 m in his first throw and surpassed it with 87.58 m but couldn’t go any further. Chopra made four legitimate throws of 87.03 m, 87.58 m, 76.79 m and 84.24, while his fourth and fifth throws were disqualified.

But his second throw was much better than the rest and enough to secure the gold for India.

Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal is only the second for India in the individual category after Abhinav Bindra, who bagged the main prize at the 19-meter air rifle shooting in China

Neeraj dominated the javelin final just as he did in the qualifying round when he threw the javelin with 86.65 m to qualify for the final with his first throw.

A nation of more than a billion waited with bated breath for a historic medal, knowing it was within reach of the country – an unprecedented feeling when it comes to track and field events at the Tokyo Games.

Neeraj exceeded expectations. He has done it in the past and the absence of Poland’s Marcin Krukowski and reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott and Rio Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego makes Neeraj favorites.
