Russia skips inviting India to crucial meet on Afghanistan; China, Pak, US invited


Russia has not invited India to a crucial meeting on Afghanistan that it called in Qatar. The meeting, entitled “Extended Troika”, will take place on August 11th. Discussions in this context previously took place on March 18 and April 30.

In addition to Russia, China, Pakistan and the US are expected to attend this meeting, which is taking place amid the rapidly evolving political and security situation in Afghanistan.

When asked not to be invited to this meeting after the first positive indications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) tried to downplay the topic and said that New Delhi was in regular contact with Russia in Afghanistan.

WHY HAVE THIS MEETING CONDUCTED

The meeting was convened following The Taliban are committing grave crimes in Afghanistan amid political unrest created by US troops leaving the war-torn country.

Russia has stepped up efforts to reach out to all major stakeholders in Afghanistan in order to stop the violence and advance the Afghan peace process.

Russia has also kept the “Moscow Format” from talking Bringing peace and creating conditions for the process of national reconciliation in Afghanistan.

INDIA DOWNPLAYS IMPORTANT

When asked whether Russia is not inviting India to this important meeting, MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi said Thursday that New Delhi was regularly interacting with Moscow on Afghanistan.

“Our two countries share a special and privileged strategic partnership. We are regularly involved with Russia in Afghanistan, ”he said.

There has been speculation that India will be invited to this meeting after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said last month that Russia will continue to work with India and other countries that can influence the situation in Afghanistan.

“We will continue to work with the Americans in the expanded troika format and with all other countries that can influence the situation in Afghanistan, including our partners from Central Asia, India, Iran and the USA,” Lavrov allegedly said.

TALIBAN AND THE SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN

The Taliban have made rapid progress across Afghanistan using widespread violence since the US started withdrawing troops out of the country on May 1st.

The US has already withdrawn most of its armed forces and plans to complete the withdrawal by August 31st.

India is an important actor for peace and stability in Afghanistan. It has already invested nearly $ 3 billion in relief and reconstruction efforts in the war-ravaged country.

India also supports a national peace and reconciliation process led, owned and controlled by Afghans.
