India already has the issue of reluctance to use Covid vaccines and there must be no news from the court calling into question the effectiveness of vaccines, the Supreme Court said as it heard a petition on Monday.
A bench of Judges L Nageswara Rao and Hrishikesh Roy heard a petition from Jacob Puliel, a former member of the National Technical Advisory Group, demanding disclosure of clinical trial data with Covid-19 vaccines. The petition also sought instructions to release the data on the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine on people, saying the government was forcing people to be stung.
Although the Supreme Court refused to temporarily suspend vaccination, it issued notices to the center, the Department of Health, the ICMR and vaccine manufacturers regarding the disclosure of data from Covid vaccine studies.
When Judge L. Nageswara Rao heard the plea, he said, “The vaccine has been given to 50 million people in the country. What do you want the vaccination program to be closed for?
“We fight against vaccination reluctance. Don’t you think such petitions would raise doubts in people’s minds?” he asked.
Judge Nageswara Rao said the bank feared that after examining the petition, the petition should not imply that the court “encourages vaccine hesitation.”
“You can’t manipulate public health like that. We haven’t seen an epidemic like this in 100 years, so there is a need to balance the vaccine in an emergency, ”he said.
When he appeared for the petitioner, senior attorney Prashant Bhushan said it was not an “anti-vaccine petition” nor was the petitioner trying to stop Covid vaccination in the country. Prashant Bhushan said that there is a need for transparency in the vaccine trials and disclosure of data would rather remove all doubts.
Citing a recent Sero survey report, Prashant Bhushan said at least two-thirds of people are infected with Covid-19, which makes their antibodies more effective than the Covid vaccine.
Prashant Bhushan said that many restrictions, including travel, have been placed on those who have not received vaccines. “Since the vaccine is voluntary, the person should not be denied facility if someone does not receive the vaccine,” he said.
The Supreme Court will look into the matter in four weeks.
