Herat, the third largest city in Afghanistan and the capital of the province of the same name, has been the target of militant attacks for days. On Thursday afternoon, the insurgents broke through the city’s defensive lines.
Witnesses described the Taliban roaming the streets fighting against government forces. The fighting closed highways and Herat airport suspended flights amid the chaos.
The Taliban captured Kabul and captured a strategic provincial capital near the capital on Thursday and broke the lines of defense in Afghanistan’s third largest city, Ghazni.
Reports indicate that the capture of Ghazni will cut off an important highway connecting the Afghan capital with the country’s southern provinces.
Kabul is reportedly not yet directly threatened, but the capture of Ghazni and the conflict elsewhere are tightening the grip of the resurgent Taliban, who now hold an estimated two-thirds of the nation.
