Tina Dabi-Athar Aamir Khan: Hailed as symbol of communal harmony, IAS couple end marriage


Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan, the civil servants of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), are now officially divorced following a decision by a court in Jaipur. They announced their separation in November 2020. The celebrated couple made headlines in 2016 when they announced their relationship and have stayed on the news for a variety of reasons since then.

Tina Dabi was the first person from the Dalit community to take the prestigious civil service examination. Athar Aamir Khan was second in the all-Indian test after Tina Dabi.

While it was Tina Dabi’s first attempt at the civil service examination, Athar Aamir Khan, a native of the Kashmir Valley, was already a qualified civil servant who had been selected for the Allied services the year before.

His second rank was hailed as a fulfilling dream for Kashmiri youth in mainstream national services. They first met during their IAS training and became a couple.

Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir Khan are the IAS officers of the Rajasthan cadre and were originally deployed in Jaipur. Tina Dabi was later transferred to Sri Ganganagar as Chief Executive Officer, Zila Parishad.

Tina Dabi is currently the Joint Finance Minister (Taxes) of the Government of Rajasthan. Athar Aamir Khan is installed in Srinagar as commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

In November 2016, Tina Dabi made her relationship with Athar Aamir Khan public through a social media post. The couple announced their plans to get married soon.

The couple’s parents provided support, but society did not. Days after the couple got out with their relationship, far-right outfit Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha as opposed to their union, calls it “love jihad”.

However, this did not affect their relationship. “It’s only this 5 percent. The majority are very happy. You would have seen in my Facebook timeline that most of the comments are encouraging. In fact, I’m overwhelmed by the support and the congratulatory messages,” Tina Dabi had said.

A QUALITY WEDDING

Two years after their relationship was published Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir Khan got married on April 7, 2018 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The wedding was a high profile ceremony that was attended by several high-ranking politicians, bureaucrats and dignitaries, including Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

Despite protests from marginalized groups, the marriage was celebrated in the media as an example of “mutual harmony”. Rahul Gandhi, then Congress President, wished the IAS couple on Twitter said her marriage was an inspiration in “this age of growing intolerance and community hatred”.

At the time of their marriage, Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir Khan were stationed in Jaipur.

Problems started quite early in their marriage. It became public knowledge in 2020 when Tina Dabi removed “Khan” from her last name from her display name on social media accounts. Around the same time, Athar Aamir Khan unfollowed her on Instagram, a social media platform popular for photo sharing.

Eventually the couple decided to give it up and filed for divorce by mutual agreement in a family court in Jaipur in November 2020. Your Divorce was enforced on August 10, 2021.

On Tuesday, Tina Dabi shared a post on her Instagram handle that said, “People will talk about you no matter what you do. So you can just as easily do what you enjoy and live your best life. “
