Tokyo 2020: India men’s hockey team to face Germany in bronze medal match after Australia win 2nd semi-final

The Indian men’s ice hockey team will face Germany in the bronze medal match on August 5 after Australia lost the 2016 Olympic third party 3-1 to start a showdown with Belgium in the Tokyo Olympics final.

Young striker Tim Brand opened the goal for Australia with a goal in the seventh minute as he shoved a low shot from teammate Flynn Ogilvie into the circle.

Germany took advantage of a penalty corner when Lukas Windfeder snapped the ball into the goal, but that wasn’t enough to keep the dominant Kookaburras in check.

Blake Govers gave Australia the lead just before half-time and Lachlan Sharp took the win towards the end of the second half.

Australia and world champions Belgium will play their gold medal game on Thursday, while India and Germany will fight for bronze.

Belgium’s Red Lions beat India 5-2 on the previous Tuesday.

“We are very proud to make it to the final, but the final step has yet to be taken,” said Belgium captain Felix Denayer.

“We’d really like to end up playing our best ice hockey.”

It took them less than two minutes to take the opening goal when defender Loick Luypaert hit from a penalty corner.

The eight-time Olympic champion India, who last won the main prize at the Moscow Games in 1980, took the lead thanks to goals from Harmanpreet Singh and striker Mandeep Singh.

But Belgium always believed they could make it to the final, said Alexander Hendrickx, the top scorer of the Tokyo tournament.
