India’s boxer Satish Kumar has received clearance to play his quarter-final match against world number 1, Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan.

Kumar, India’s first super heavyweight boxer (+91 kg), had seven tricks in his fight against Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown before the quarter-finals.

The two-time bronze medalist of the Asian Championships, Indian, defeated Brown 4-1 in his first fight.

Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov, the reigning world and Asian champions, defeated Azerbaijan’s Mahammad Abdullayev 5-0 in the round of 16.

The late bloomer from Uttar Pradeshs Bulandshahr is an army man who used to play kabaddi and was introduced to the sport by army coaches due to his good stature.

Satish is a former Asian Games bronze medalist and a Commonwealth Games silver medalist.

India has traditionally done well in the lower weight classes, but after Amit Panghal’s shocking first-round defeat on Saturday, all hopes are on Satish Kumar, the only Indian boxer to survive in Tokyo 2020.

So far, Amit Panghal (52 kg), Manish Kaushik (63 kg), Vikas Krishan (69 kg) and Ashish Chaudhary (75 kg) have left the nine-man squad that qualified for the games with defeats in the first round .

Panghal, who also made his debut at the Games and was seeded as top, fizzled out after a good start.

One of India’s strongest medal contenders, Panghal was put under pressure by the sprightly Colombian himself in the first round, but the pre-fight favorite ensured he won the first three minutes 4-1.

Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) is still the only Indian boxer who has won a medal in the current games after making it to the semi-finals. She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen from Chinese Taipei in her quarter-finals.
