Former IPS official Amitabh Thakur was arrested Thursday after the rape victim, who tried to set himself on fire outside the Supreme Court, succumbed to injuries.

Amitabh Thakur was arrested following an investigation report from the SIT. The rape victim had accused the former MLA Mukhtar Ansari of creating a “conspiracy” to rescue the allegedly raped BSP MP Atul Rai.

The woman and her male friend tried to kill themselves in the Supreme Court on August 16. Both the woman and her male friend had Facebook Live before attempting to kill themselves. While the victim succumbed to his injuries on August 24, her male friend died on August 21.

A video of his arrest went viral on social media defying the arrest while demanding a copy of the FIR. Amitabh Thakur can be heard repeatedly saying “Nahi Jaunga” (I will not go) when the police force him into their vehicle.

The committee of inquiry formed after the victim’s death presented its report, on the basis of which a case was registered in Hazratganj Kotwali, Lucknow.

During the self-immolation outside the Supreme Court, the rape victim and her helper had made a statement on social media. The declaration was accepted by the investigative commission as a “death declaration” and on the basis of which an FIR was registered, according to sources.

BSP MPs Atul Rai and IPS Amitabh Thakur were named in the FIR. The whole matter has been investigated by DG Recruitment Board RK Vishwakarma and ADG Neera Rawat.
