Women can work, will honor their rights within Islamic law: Taliban in first presser since Afghanistan takeover

In their first official press conference since the capture of Kabul, the Taliban said they wanted peaceful relations with other countries, adding that they did not want “enemies inside or outside”.

At the press conference in the presidential palace in Kabul, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that women’s rights are protected “within the limits of Islamic law”.

“Women will be very active in society, but within the framework of Islam” Al Jazeera quoted Mujahid as saying.

Zabihullah Mujahid also said: “We want to assure our neighboring countries that our country will not be abused against them. The international community should also recognize us”.

The Taliban spokesman called the Ghani-led government “incompetent” and said their plan is to stop at the gates of Kabul after they conquer the rest of the territories.

“We want to guarantee the security of the international embassies and organizations in Kabul. Our plan was to stop at the gates of Kabul after taking the remaining territories, but unfortunately the previous government was incompetent. They could not provide security for all foreign organizations. We are not looking for enemies inside or outside Afghanistan, “said Zabihullah Mujahid.

When asked about the differences between the Taliban of the 1990s and the present day, Mujahid said the ideology and beliefs are the same because they are Muslims, but there is a change in experience. He added that they are more experienced and have a different perspective.

Taliban vow to respect the rights of women in Islamic law

The Taliban spokesman promised to respect women’s rights, but within the norms of Islamic law. His claim that the Taliban would protect women’s rights comes after their resurgence has brought back women’s fear of their previous rule, which severely curtailed women’s lives and rights.

Mujahid also said the Taliban wanted private media to “remain independent” but stressed that journalists “should not work against national values”.

Mujahid also stressed that Afghanistan will not allow itself to host anyone targeting other nations.

This was a key demand in an agreement the militants concluded with the Trump administration in 2020 that led to the final US withdrawal under current President Joe Biden.

He promised that the insurgents would secure Afghanistan after taking over the country after a lightning strike that lasted more than a week.

Mujahid said the Taliban fighters did not want revenge.

Many Afghans live in fear that the Taliban will return the country to the brutal rule they used during their last term in office, and foreign officials have announced that they will wait to see if the insurgents keep their promises.

“Nobody is allowed to use territory for attacks”

The Taliban spokesman also assured that Afghan territory should not be used for attacks against any nation.

“I want to make sure that I want to reassure the international community, including the United States, that no one will be harmed.” Al Jazeera quoted Mujahid as saying.

“In Afghanistan I want to assure our neighbors, our countries of origin, that we will not allow our territory to be used against anyone or any country in the world. Therefore, the entire world community should be assured that we are committed to these joys so that you do not come to harm, ”he said.
