5th Test: Fingers crossed the game will go ahead, says England’s Jos Buttler after Covid scare in India camp

Jos Buttler, who returned to England for the 5th Test after missing the Oval Test on paternity leave, confirmed that things are going well in the English camp and the hosts have been training well on the eve of the 5th Test. In particular, India had to cancel its last training session on Thursday as players were asked to come after one positive Covid-19 test for physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar.

All Indian players tested negative for Covid-19 in the first round of testing, but results are expected for the second round, which was held on Thursday. Both teams go through an anxious wait while the fate of the test is in the balance. If an Indian player tests positive for the virus, it is unlikely that the test match will take place as he or she is aged 19 and over.

“Right now we’re preparing to play tomorrow – keep our fingers crossed for the game to go on. We don’t know too much, to be honest. It would be naive to speculate too much about things I don’t know about” said Jos Buttler told the press on Thursday.

“Everything is fine in our camp – we trained well this morning.”

Indian players in particular took part last week despite head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and field coach R Sridhar. the field for the 4th test in the oval in London tested positive for Covid-19. Physiotherapist Nitin Patel was also forced into isolation after being seen as close contact with the caregivers concerned.

Virat Kohli’s men played the 4th test without three of the key members of the support team. Ravi Shastri had a positive result in a lateral flow test hours before the first day of play in the oval. His RT-PCR test became positive the following day along with Bharat and Sridhar.

India lead the 5-Test streak 2-1 after making a notable comeback in the 4th Test in London. India give a 99-run lead in the first innings after being knocked out for 191. They scored 466 in the second innings, however, bundling England for 210 in a docile place on the final day.
