A large granite memorial honoring 9-11 victims was defaced by vandals who sprayed “Taliban” on it in two places, the South Carolina authorities said.
The granite statue consists of two towers, each weighing 4,000 pounds, and a beam of light outside a shop in Greenville County, WYFF-TV reported.
Prosecutors were called in to investigate the vandalism Sunday morning and the damage was repaired later that day, said Paul Nichols, founder and CEO of Upstate Granite Solutions. His granite company erected the monument, which is surrounded by 1,000 American flags, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.
“This memorial is designed to show the community how much we care and offer our support to our military and first responders and let people know that there is still something to believe in America,” said Kelly Nichols of Upstate Granite Solutions.
Nichols said hundreds of people visited the memorial on Saturday night.
