India has informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the situation in Afghanistan remains fragile and that we, as neighbors, are very concerned.
“The situation in Afghanistan is still very fragile. As an immediate neighbor and friend of his people, the current situation is of direct concern to us, ”said India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Tirumurti, during a UN Security Council debate on Afghanistan.
Tirumurti added: “There are many uncertainties about the future of the Afghan people and about the maintenance and development of the gains made over the past two decades. In this context, we reaffirm the need to make the voices of Afghan women heard. “
This comes at a time when the Taliban have announced a new government led by Taliban leaders who will rule Afghanistan. Several top ministers announced by the Taliban government have been labeled terrorists around the world, including the interior minister.
Tirumurti also stressed the need to “realize the aspirations of Afghan children and protect the rights of minorities”. He said: “We call for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid and emphasize the need to allow unhindered access to the United Nations and other organizations in this regard.”
The Ambassador said: “India is calling for an inclusive dispensation in Afghanistan that represents all sections of Afghan society. A broad, inclusive and representative formation achieved through an inclusive political negotiated solution would gain greater international acceptance and legitimacy. “
Meanwhile the five nation BRICS group strong on Thursday called for attempts by various terrorist groups to be prevented to use the territory of Afghanistan for attacks on other countries, and called for an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue to ensure peace and stability in that country.
At a virtual summit hosted by India, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BRICS leaders stressed the need to address the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and uphold human rights, including the rights of women, children and minorities.
The concerns listed by the BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) in their statement bear striking similarities to the concerns raised by India after the Taliban came to power in the country following the withdrawal of US troops.
