At least 16 people died on Sunday while immersed in Ganesh idols in four states in the country. Eight people died in various incidents in Madhya Pradesh, and another five reportedly died in Uttar Pradesh, in addition to two deaths in Rajasthan and one in Maharashtra on the last day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
Uttar Pradesh
In the Barabanki neighborhood of Uttar Pradesh, five people, including a woman and her two sons, drowned after slipping into the Kalyani River during the diving ceremony.
A Narayan Dhar Pandey (58), a resident of Sadatganj village, had an idol of Lord Ganesh installed in his home. He and his neighbors had gone to dip the idol in the Kalyani River, which was swollen from incessant rainfall when the accident occurred, Police Superintendent (SP) Yamuna Prasad said.
Aside from Narayan Dhar Pandey, the other deceased were identified as Dharmendra Pandey, 20, Munni Devi, 62 and their two sons Suraj Patwa, 18 and Neelesh, 35, PTI news agency reported.

Meanwhile, in Chhota Haridwar, Ghaziabad, two boys were rescued by an NDRF team after falling into a pond while being immersed. A total of four people were rescued in the region.

Madhya Pradesh
In various incidents, at least eight boys between the ages of nine and 17 died while Ganesh Idol immersed himself in the Bhind, Rajgarh and Satna districts of Madhya Pradesh. While seven of them drowned in a pond, one fell into a well.
Four boys aged 11 to 14 drowned in the Vankhandeshwar pond on Sunday afternoon in the Bhind district. The incident occurred after these boys went to the pond to immerse themselves in idols of Lord Ganesh, Bhind’s Police Subdivision Officer (SDOP) Rajesh Rathore told reporters.
In another incident, three boys between the ages of 9 and 11 drowned in the Joora village pond in the Satna district, said the Hiralal Mishra police station responsible.
Braj Singh, 17, was trying to hide a Ganesh idol when he slipped and fell into a well in the village of Kacharia, Rajgrah district. After he was rescued, he was taken to the nearby Sarangpur Hospital. However, due to his serious condition, doctors referred him to Shajapur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, two men drowned in a pond while hiding a Ganesh idol in Ajmer district, police said. The incident took place on a farm in the Mangliyawas area.
The farm owner Abhishek (35) and another man, Rajkumar (30), slipped into the pond when the idol was submerged. Others on the scene tried to save the two men, but to no avail, said Station House Officer (SHO), Mangliyawas, Sunil Kumar.
Maharashtra
An 18-year-old man died and another person was feared he drowned while the Lord Ganesh idol went into hiding in the Alandi Road area of Pimpri Chinchwad, near the city of Pune, on Sunday evening, police said.
The body of the deceased identified as Prajwal Kale had been fished out while looking for Datta Thombre (20), who had entered the river water with Kale, it said.
