Asansol MP and former Union Minister Babul Supriyo joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) last weekMonths after he quit the Bharatiya Janata Party and announced his retirement from active politics.
His exit from the BJP invited some unusual statements by party leaders, which brought many blows to Babul Supriyo. Dilip Ghosh, who has just lost the post of BJP President of West Bengal said: “It was not a big blow to the party than he was [Babul Supriyo] entered or when he left. “
Once considered an anti-TMC face in West Bengal BJP, Babul Supriyo spoke in an exclusive interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, editor of India Today TV Consulting, about his decision to move to the Trinamool Congress.
Many see the move as political opportunism …
Did I create history by switching parties? What about other people in other states joining the BJP?
Some see it as an opportunity[But this is] a place where I was accepted with love and trust. Wherever you think I can contribute. I’m not here to enjoy public money and all the perks and do nothing.
All other leaders who have joined the BJP should be encouraged to return to their original parties because changing parties is considered “political opportunism”.

Up until a few months ago you attacked Mamata Banerjee. In 2019 you said: “Bizarre statements are the USP of Mamata Banerjee. You can’t expect logic or constitutional things. “

In previous Champions League games, he met against PSG. Do you expect that now when he plays for PSG he will be at the Nou Camp in Barcelona? [home ground] and no goal against Barcelona?
You can’t compare football and politics. What’s your ideology?
I don’t want my seven years in parliamentary politics to be wasted. My rivals gave me a great chance that I hadn’t expected. All of this has happened in the past five days.
The ideology of all parties works for the public.
What happens to all the statements you made against the TMC and Mamata Banerjee when your car was attacked?
That is what the left did.
What happened to being considered an anti-TMC face in Bengal?
If I was considered the anti-TMC face in Bengal, why wasn’t that respected? You have to ask my previous bosses that.
I’m very grateful [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi ji, [Union Home Minister] Amit Shah, [BJP president JP] Nadda ji, to give me a platform in the BJP and to let me learn so much parliamentary politics over the past seven years.
In 2014, as a Bengali, I took it on as a challenge and asked my name to be added to the list. I asked BJP to add my name to the list and I will win you a spot. I did that in 2014 and then again in 2019.
But if you’re the editor of a particular newspaper, will you like it when you become a copywriter?
People say that you didn’t leave out of love for Mamata Banerjee or TMC, but because BJP kicked you out of the cabinet.
Who goes where is the prerogative of the party, the prime minister and the organization. But if I feel like I’m not needed or don’t get the opportunity, I won’t take my salary and do nothing.
I left politics with all my heart and came back today because I did responds to a good opportunity where all the experiences i have gathered, i can use them.
What does Mamata Banerjee offer you?
I am not authorized or empowered to spell anything, it is the prerogative of the supremo of the party. I am a workaholic. I’m not here to sit and do nothing.
I’ve already been looking for an appointment with the Hon’ble Speaker for tomorrow [for MP seat]if i get it tomorrow i will quit tomorrow [as Asansol MP].
Is politics about ideology? Is it about loyalty to celebrate, win or lose?
It is not about holding an office, but with responsibility, I love the work. No matter which team I play for, I play with all my heart.
If you did such a good job, why did the Modi government remove you from the cabinet?
That is the prime minister’s prerogative. I respect that. Now BJP has to respect my decision.
Do you think Mamata Banerjee, whom you have so criticized, is good enough to be a PM candidate?
In a democracy, the opposition is an important pillar. If we talk about the 2024 elections, there will be opposition. And after what we’ve seen in the political scenario for the past three months, Mamata Didi is definitely on the list as one of the opposition [leaders]. This is something I would agree with whether I’m with TMC, a political observer, or retired from politics.
Describe your situation in a song?
Yeh duniya whale puchhenge, mulaqaat hui kya baat hui, yeh baat kisi se na kehna, yeh duniya whale puchhenge [People will ask, what transpired there in the meeting, but don’t tell this to anyone, people will continue asking the same thing].
