BCCI against postponement or suspension of Manchester Test, will seek cancellation in worst-case scenario

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has no interest in postponing or suspending the 5th Test, which is due to start in Manchester on September 10th India’s physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar tested positive for Covid-19, which forces the players to go into isolation on the eve of the series finale.

In the event that one of the players tests positive for Covid-19 and India is unable to enter the field in Manchester on Friday, the BCCI would request the cancellation and division of the World Test Championship points between the two sides. India currently leads England 2-1 in the 5 Test series after coming in 4th.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said Thursday he was unsure whether the 5th test would start as planned. England’s vice-captain on the other side Jos Buttler had said that the hosts trained on Thursday and kept their fingers crossed for the series finale to be played.

India had to cancel its last training session on Thursday after the support agent’s Covid-19 test was positive. The 5th and final test is now in doubt as the visitors wait for the results of the players’ RT-PCR tests, which are expected around midnight.

All players are currently isolated in their respective hotel rooms and had RT-PCR tests for Covid-19 on Thursday morning.

Indian players took on last week despite head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and field coach R Sridhar. the field for the 4th test in the oval in London tested positive for Covid-19. Physiotherapist Nitin Patel was also forced into isolation after being seen as close contact with the caregivers concerned.

Virat Kohli’s men played the 4th test without three of the key members of the support team.

BCCI, ECB in contact to decide next course of action

As of now, the BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are in touch to find a way forward, but everything will depend on the results of the tests that were conducted on the players on Thursday.

The ECB has also suggested that the team could play the friendly next year if the game doesn’t take place on Friday when India travels to England for a white ball series. The ECB didn’t announce its home game schedule until Thursday, and India is expected to play 3 ODIs and as many T20Is in July 2022.
