After months of power struggles in the Punjab Congress, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh submitted his resignation on Saturday, which was accepted by the governor. Sources say the next Punjab prime minister is likely to come from the camp led by Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Former head of the Punjab Congress Sunil Jakhar could be the first choice for the next prime minister, sources said. Jakhar’s appointment as prime minister could give the Punjab Congress a combination of a Hindu Sikh prime minister and a Jat Sikh president, which could favor the party ahead of the upcoming state elections.

However, it is also expected that Navjot Singh Sidhu himself could be projected for the top post as Sunil Jakhar is not an MLA in the Punjab Assembly. follow LIVE updates from Punjab

Another name that is making the rounds is Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra. He was one of the leaders of the Sidhu camp who received party observers Ajay Maken and Harish Chaudhary at Chandigarh Airport today ahead of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting.

In the meantime, two resolutions were passed at the session of the Congress Legislative Party in Chandigarh on Saturday. The first resolution was in recognition of the role of the government led by Captain Amarinder Singh in the development of Punjab.

The second resolution said that the interim president of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi, would elect the new prime minister of Punjab and the members of the legislature would have to accept the decision.

Only two Congressional MLAs, including Captain Amarinder Singh, skipped the Congress Legislative Party meeting.
