China rushes to contain Delta outbreak in Fujian ahead of busy ‘Golden Week’


Authorities have made massive efforts to contain the spread of a Delta variant outbreak in China’s southern Fujian Province. The province borders Zhejiang to the north and Guangdong to the south.

China has so far reported 1.23 lakh confirmed cases of infection and 5,687 virus-related deaths, according to the World Health Organization’s Covid dashboard. The country even managed to tackle another Delta variant Breakout from Nanjing in July this year.

The emergence of the highly transferable Delta variant in China has worried experts. The same delta variant has led to a significant increase in Covid 19 cases in the United States in recent weeks.

A team of experts sent to Fujian called the outbreak “severe and complicated,” but said it could subside before the end of the month, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The outbreak was first spotted at a primary school in Putian city, which is why Chinese state media have dubbed it the country’s “first school-centered flare-up”. In Putian alone, up to 8 kindergarten children and 28 elementary school students were infected.

In a statement, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said that 59 new locally transmitted cases were reported from Fujian Province on Sept. 13, compared with 22 just a day earlier.

Containment measures

Authorities in both Putian and Xiamen have ordered residents not to leave the city except for essential travel. Anyone traveling outside of the city must also have a negative coronavirus test report with them.
