Consider opening places of worship to public: Retired Supreme Court judge to Delhi CM

Retired Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph has written to Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal asking him to open places of worship to the public as the second wave of Covid-19 has slowed “significantly”.

Judge Kurian praised the efforts of the government and health workers in fighting the pandemic, saying it was “encouraging and relieving” that the intensity of the second wave in Delhi has “subsided”. When the capital was gradually released, restaurants, bars, theaters and lecture halls were allowed to resume operations with a capacity of 50 percent.

“These are positive signs that society is returning to normal,” wrote Judge Joseph in his letter to CM Kejriwal.

With this in mind, the retired judge questioned the need to restrict public access to religious places.

“The approval of religious services and services in public places of worship would otherwise have no adverse effects if other permitted activities are taken into account. It is a fact that attending religious services and worship services would only help alleviate their deep stress and would only fill them with positivity, hope, inner strength and confidence, which is the order of the day, “Kurisch said.

In the letter, Judge Kurian further pointed out that “the prohibition of worship in public places of worship will be discriminatory and may mean a denial of the constitutional rights guaranteed in Articles 14, 19, 21 and 25”.

In its most recent report, the National Institute of Disaster Management Central Committee warned that a third Covid-19 wave could peak around October. Citing a recent study, the panel said India could experience “third wave 6 lakh cases per day” if the country’s vaccination rate does not improve.

Even today, health professionals remain concerned about the pandemic situation, particularly the admission of new cases from just one state – Kerala.
