A Delhi court has summoned the wife of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairman Abhishek Banerjee, Rujira Banerjee, over the enforcement directorate’s complaint against her. The agency alleged in its complaint that Rujira Banerjee did not appear before the agency despite multiple subpoenas in connection with a coal smuggling case.
The agency reportedly suspects that Rujira Banerjee deliberately lied to the agency because she had traveled to Delhi around the same time but failed to come for questioning, citing the risk of a Covid-19 pandemic.
Rujira Banerjee, who received a subpoena on August 18, instructing her to live on the 1st.
“I am the mother of two babies and traveling to New Delhi physically alone will seriously endanger my life and that of my children,” Rujira Banerjee wrote in a letter to the agency on August 31.
However, according to the sources, Rujira Banerjee had actually traveled on an Air India flight from Kolkata to Delhi and was in the city until August 28.
Investigators have also reportedly found that Rujira Banerjee allegedly visited beauty salons in Delhi and also traveled to some hill stations in the Delhi area.
“She was informed of her interrogation almost two weeks earlier. She visited Delhi around the same time, went to public places such as beauty salons and tourist spots, but returned to Calcutta just three days before being questioned and later gave a pandemic as an excuse. This means that she used the pandemic as an excuse and deliberately lied to avoid her questioning, ”a source said.
On the basis of this evidence, the ED moved the Patiala House Court in Delhi, which now summoned Rujira Banerjee on September 30th.
ABHISHEK BANERJEE, RUJIRA BANERJEE MOVE DELHI HC
This comes after TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee moved the Delhi High Court, He called for the ED’s subpoena to be lifted and for instructions that the Kolkata case should be investigated in accordance with the law.
“Although she knows and has been informed that Ms. Banerjee is a housewife and mother of two minor children, she is repeatedly instructed to travel to Delhi despite the fact that the ED has a fully functioning zone office in Calcutta and other women related to the case in theirs respective houses, “said Abhishek Banerjee’s lawyer Rupin Bahl.
The TMC leader insisted that this was done for politically motivated reasons, while Rupin Bahl claimed that the central authority had neither informed them of the charges against Banerjee nor received a copy of the ECIR or FIR.
At the beginning of this month, the The enforcement directorate was TMC MP. subpoenaed and Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Prime Minister Mamta Banerjee of West Bengal, appear before him on September 21 in Delhi in connection with a coal smuggling case.
