The Delhi Supreme Court’s single judge bench of Judge Suresh Kumar Kait on Monday ordered Google and Facebook to suspend 25 different websites, accounts and pages alleged to infringe the Aaj Tak brand and mislead consumers that these “anonymous” websites are somehow related to the Aaj Tak brand.

In September 2020, the High Court issued a similar order against four defendants, which has now been expanded to an additional 25 different websites.

The bank has also registered all of these websites along with Google, Facebook and other domain name registrars as parties in the case, notified them and asked them to respond by the third week of October.

Living Media India Ltd, the parent company of the Aaj Tak brand, had argued before the court that the anonymous websites pretending to be Aaj Tak were misleading and misleading the public that these anonymous websites were linked to the Aaj Tak brand, and that led to an immense loss of goodwill and brand reputation.

The bank agreed prima-facie with the plaintiff and issued an injunction in favor of Aaj Tak instructing Google and Facebook to open 25 such sites called ‘Aaj Tak Live’, ‘Aaj Tak India News’, ‘E-Aaj Tak’ etc. .

The Delhi High Court order goes a long way in protecting a news brand from fake news and fake screenshots which have resulted in widespread disinformation being spread to the public on behalf of news, especially during the pandemic.

The company also argued in its plea that “the recent proliferation of anonymous websites is not just a coincidence, but is driven by Malafide to take advantage of the vulnerability of innocent viewers in such unprecedented times of the pandemic and ride on the stronghold”. enjoyed by Aaj Tak “.
