Former Karnataka Prime Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday condemned the demolition of an “old” Hindu temple in Nanjangud, Mysuru district, saying the BJP government should have consulted local residents before taking such action, “as to religious sentiments who hurt people “. The people”.
“The destruction of an ancient temple in Nanjangud is reprehensible. Since it was a sensitive topic, the @ BJP4Karnataka should have spoken to the local residents. “He said in a series of tweets. The congressional leader requested that a piece of land be earmarked for a temple to be built to compensate for the demolition.

Officials from Mysuru District alleged that they were merely following orders to demolish illegal religious structures across the state, saying the temple was not on the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maps and was only 12 years old.
A letter from Secretary of State P Ravi Kumar to the Deputy Commissioners dated July 1, 2021 states that Karnataka has 6,395 unauthorized religious structures in public places.
As of September 29, 2009, the number of these structures was 5,688. In 12 years the state was only able to demolish, relocate and regulate 2,887 of them.
The Secretary of State’s letter instructed the district administrations and city municipal authorities to prepare and carry out an action plan each week for the demolition of at least one illegal religious structure per taluk and division.
Dakshina Kannada district with 1,579 illegal religious structures has the highest number of unauthorized religious structures in public places, followed by Shivamogga (740), Belagavi (612), Kolar (397), Bagalkot (352), Dharwad (324), Mysuru ( 315) and Koppal (306), it says in the letter.
