Elderly people at higher risk of severe breakthrough Covid-19 infection, finds CDC study

Older people and people with multiple underlying conditions are at higher risk of developing serious illness if they contract a Covid-19 infection even after being fully vaccinated, suggested a preprint study published last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC).

As of August 30, the CDC had received up to 12,908 reports of serious breakthrough cases of Covid-19 infection (in people who were fully vaccinated). which resulted in either hospitalization or death, a CNN report read.

The data obtained from the CDC suggest that about 70 percent of breakthrough cases that led to hospitalization occurred in adults over the age of 65.

In addition, about 87 percent of people who died from a breakthrough infection were also adults aged 65 and over.

These CDC data are based on voluntary reports from states and may be incomplete. However, several other studies suggest similar trends.

HOW THE CDC STUDY WAS DONE

A study by the CDC was conducted in which the US agency found 4,700 hospital admissions for adults between the 24 cents of the US population.

The study has not yet been peer-reviewed or published.

WHAT THE CDC STUDY CONTAINS

the Study, which was conducted over six months, found that “patients were hospitalized with a breakthrough”. Patients are usually older and more likely to have at least three underlying diseases “.

The mean age of patients hospitalized after a breakthrough infection was 73 years, and about 71 percent had three or more underlying conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and others

Meanwhile, unvaccinated patients hospitalized with Covid-19 had an average age of 59 years and about 56 percent had three or more underlying diseases, the CNN report said, citing the study.

The CDC study also found that from late June to late July, when the Delta variant accounted for at least half of all Covid-19 cases, unvaccinated Americans were about 10 times more likely to be hospitalized for Covid-19 than those who were fully vaccinated.

In addition, unvaccinated adults in the US are 17 times more likely to be hospitalized for Covid-19 than fully vaccinated adults.

Another study published in The Lancet in September of that year was also stated that older people with underlying diseases were responsible for the most serious breakthrough cases.
