The newly appointed Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi sparked controversy on Tuesday when he took a private jet to New Delhi on Tuesday. The 16-seater plane flew four people to Delhi for a meeting with senior congressional leaders to discuss the new Punjab cabinet.
Apart from Prime Minister Channi, Other occupants of the flight included Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Chief of Punjab Congress Navjot Singh Sidhu, and a relative of the cricketer who became a politician.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Navjot Singh Sidhu went to Twitter to post a picture of himself with the Prime Minister and Deputy CM next to the private jet. In his tweet, Sidhu wrote: “Duty !!”

16-seater Learjet for four people: Raveen Thukral
Raveen Thukral, the former media advisor to Captain Amarinder Singh, criticized the decision to take a 16-seater jet when the Punjab government’s helicopter was enough in a tweet: “Wow. What a ‘gareeban di sarkar’! “
“A 16-seat Learjet to carry four people when an official five-seater chopper was available, I now feel like I’ve been sleepwalking for the past four and a half years and believe that Punjab is in fiscal chaos,” added Thukral added.
The question is who pays for so much luxury – the state government or @INCPunjab? Can not be @sherryontopp or @CHARANJITCHANNI or @Sukhjinder_INC or #OPSoni for sure. Though I think it is ultimately the mean man who will pay the bill for his pleasure! 2/2

There were no normal flights or cars: Akali Dal
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also quickly threw a stab at the new Prime Minister of Punjab and his team.
Akali Dal Vice President Daljit Cheema said, “After saying they are on the common man’s side, INC leaders are taking private jets to travel just 250 km from Chandigarh to Delhi. Are there no normal flights or cars that can be used? Or is this chest? – Thumping aimed at spreading the Delhi-darbar culture of the Gandhi family. “
Dent in public money: AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also took the opportunity and claimed it was a waste of state resources.
“Yesterday, Chief Minister Charanjit Channi made high demands of his government, but made a U-turn within 24 hours and used a private jet to meet the party’s high command. This has revealed the true face of Congress and its culture to squeeze in public funds, “said Harpal Singh Cheema of AAP MLA.
Cheema, who is also the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, added: “The state government has no money for the common people, but it can rent a private jet. Be it Akali Dal or Congress, both parties are equal.”
Urgency jet suspended: Congress
Asked for comment, Punjab Congress Chairman Prince Khullar made it clear that there was an urgency why the private jet was hired to take CM Channi and the others to Delhi.
“The leaders of the Akali Dal should not forget what they have done in the past. There was an urgent need to hire a private jet,” said Prince Khullar.
It’s important to note that Punjab State’s national debt is likely to hit 3.73 lakh crores by FY2024-25, according to the latest CAG report. Punjab’s debt has increased fourfold in the past decade.
