For the first time since the single tax for all of India, GST, came into effect in 2017, the top decision-making body, the GST Council, could consider a proposal to bring gasoline and diesel under the GST regime.
The agenda for the GST Council It is planned for September 17 in Lucknow to consider the taxation of gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products as part of the uniform national GST regulation.
It does this when fuel prices are at their highest levels and consumers take a hit. Loud calls have been made to include fuels in the GST regulation as it is expected to bring prices down dramatically.

When a national GST subsumed central taxes such as excise duties and government duties such as value added tax on July 1, 2017, five mineral oil goods – gasoline, diesel, ATF, natural gas and crude oil – were kept out of their area of responsibility until the states achieved a sales-neutral situation (if the GST – Revenue matches revenue generated in the pre-GST era).
Currently, the five fuels are subject to central consumption, consumption and state value-added taxes, which generate enormous revenues for the center and the states.
Several states have also spoken out against including fuels in the GST as it is a consumption-based tax and bringing petro-products under the regime would mean states that sell those products make the revenue, not those that do They are currently most benefiting from this because they are the center of production.

Despite the outcry, the states are firmly opposed to the move because they fear an enormous loss of income. For this reason, the GST Council has never taken up a proposal to include fuels in the GST regime.
This time the Council did not accept a proposal to examine suo motu. Instead, when the Kerala Supreme Court asked the GST Council, on the basis of a written petition, in June to take a decision on including gasoline and diesel in the scope of goods and services tax (GST), it was forced to do so.
However, sources confirmed that the proposal was for Bring gasoline and diesel inside the GST would be submitted to the Council for discussion in the light of the Court’s invitation.
At Friday’s session, however, the move may not find support from states that go beyond party lines. Even the Center may not necessarily endorse the proposal as the move may require major compromises by central and state governments on the revenues they generate from taxing these products.
The council, made up of central and state finance ministers, is also likely to consider extending the time for tariff relief on COVID-19 fundamentals at its scheduled meeting in Lucknow on Friday, according to sources aware of the development.
