IMD predicts extremely heavy rain in Maharashtra’s Palghar over next 24 hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in and around Palghar in Maharashtra for the next 24 hours. Isolated heavy to very heavy rains could also devastate parts of Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri, said the weather office.

Head of Weather forecast department of the IMD In Pune, Dr. Anupam Kashyapi told India Today: “The formation of low pressure systems one after the other leads to very heavy rains in the north of Maharashtra, in the north-west of Maharashtra and in the districts of Ratnagiri and Raigad.”

Heavy rains also occurred in isolated locations in parts of Marathwada, added Dr. Kashyapi added. He also said the ghats in the Nashik district are likely to experience heavy rainfall for the next 24-48 hours.

On Sunday, the IMD issued an orange alert for Palghar, which predicted extremely heavy to very heavy rain until September 15. A yellow alert was also issued for Mumbai by the weather agency.

In the northern part of the Konkan region, too, occasional heavy to very heavy rainfall is to be expected.

Heavy rain means 6.5 to 11.4 cm in 24 hours. At the same time, 11.5 to 20.4 cm in 24 hours is referred to as very heavy rain, while more than 8 inches is referred to as extremely heavy rain.

Another low pressure area was created over the Bay of Bengal brought extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh on Monday, according to the IMD’s earlier forecast.

The deep depression over inland Odisha and another low pressure area over southern Gujarat will most likely result in heavy rainfall in isolated locations in central and northern Maharashtra.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi said that southern Maharashtra will also be affected, but there will be less rain in this area compared to some other parts of the state.

As the low pressure system over Odisha moves from west to northwest, westerly winds from the Arabian Sea become stronger, resulting in widespread rainfall. This means that over 76 percent of the area in the Konkan and Sahyadri areas will experience heavy rainfall over the next four to five days.

However, rainfall in Maharashtra is expected to drop dramatically after September 15th.
