India made history at the Tokyo Paralympics and returned home with up to 19 medals, by far the best record in a single Paralympic event. With up to 5 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 6 bronze medals among the top 25 at the Para Games in the Japanese capital.
India’s number of 19 is also the best in the country at a multi-spot world event, beating 13 at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games. The record number at the Paralympics comes after the healthy athletes make history in the Olympics in Tokyo, won 7 medals, their best record ever at the Olympics.
At the Paralympics in Tokyo, India landed in the top 25 of the medal table, overtaking its 15 best medals to date.
From its first Paralympic Games in 1968 to 2016, India had won 12 medals, but the bar was set high by the para-athletes when they return home with a staggering 19. In fact, India only had 19 athletes in the Rio Paralympics where they won 4 medals.
Much was expected of India’s largest Paralympic line-up – a 54-strong unit – and the para-athletes lived up to the hype and won medals at will in Tokyo.
It all started with a table tennis medal when Bhavinaben Patel became the first Indian to win a table tennis medal at the Paralympics. It ended up with two badminton players winning medals as Krishna Nagar won historical gold in the men’s singles category SH6 and Suhas Yathiraj, an IAS officer, won silver in the SL4 category.
There have been several medalists for both India and India Avani Lekhara won a gold medal and a bronze medal in shooting, while Singhraj took silver and bronze in shooting. Notably, Avani will be India’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony of the Paralympics in Tokyo on Sunday after becoming the first ever female gold medalist at the Paralympics or Olympic Games.
