TMC boss and former Union minister Babul Supriyo said West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was one of the frontrunners for the post of prime minister in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

“I want our party’s captain, Mamata Banerjee, to become prime minister in 2024. The opposition plays an important role in a democratic system. Nobody can deny that Mamata Banerjee is one of the frontrunners in the post of prime minister.” Babul Supriyo said ANI.

The Asansol MP and former BJP leader took part in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on SaturdayMonths after he announced his decision to get out of politics.

Babul Supriyo was inducted into the TMC by the party’s national secretary general, Abhishek Banerjee, and MP Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien.

The former Minister of State for the Environment had declared at the time that he would not join any other party. Babul Supriyo’s announcement came after he was fired from the Union cabinet during a reshuffle in July.

Babul Supriyo’s remarks come days after TMC’s mouthpiece “Jaago Bangla” declared that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi failed to become an alternate face to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was said to be the potential alternative to Prime Minister Modi in the next Lok Sabha elections.

Babul Supriyo also told ANI that there was resentment among the old BJP leaders. “I didn’t make history by switching parties. Before the West Bengal Assembly elections, a horde of BJP leaders from other parties joined them. There is resentment among the old leaders. The BJP should ask them about their resentment, ”Babul Supriyo told ANI.

Babul Supriyo has announced that he will be stepping down from the BJP and stepping down as a member of parliament for Asansol.
