MS Dhoni agreed to be mentor of India for T20 World Cup only, says BCCI secretary Jay Shah


T20 World Cup: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said he proposed the mentorship offer to MS Dhoni in Dubai and that the former captain of India was interested in contributing to the national cricket team again. Dhoni has been named mentor to Virat Kohli’s team for the T20 tournament, which kicks off in Oman and the United Arab Emirates on October 17.

Among the many surprises in the announcement of the Indian T20 World Cup squad, the appointment of MS Dhoni as the team’s mentor during the multi-nation tournament from October 17th caused a sensation. The former captain who led India to glory at the first edition of the 2007 T20 World Cup will work with the support team and skipper Virat Kohli led by Ravi Shastri in the United Arab Emirates.

MS Dhoni is expected to join the roster with the Chennai Super Kings in 2021 after completing his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint. Dhoni arrived in Dubai last month and has been training with some of his CSK teammates for the tournament to resume from September 19th.

Jay Shah made it clear that MS Dhoni’s appointment is for the T20 World Cup only and the former captain agreed to the role for the duration of the T20 tournament. The BCCI secretary added that the decision was discussed with Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri before it was officially announced on September 8th.

“I am delighted that MS has accepted this offer and he is very keen to contribute to our national team again. MS Dhoni will work closely with Ravi Shastri and the other support staff to support Team India,” said Jay Shah.

“As for MS Dhoni, I spoke to him when I was in Dubai. He agreed to mentor Team India only for the T20 World Cup. I discussed this with my colleagues too, they are also at the same Page” . I spoke to the captain and vice-captain as well as Ravi Shastri. That’s why we came to the conclusion. “

India announced a 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup and named 3 stand-by players. While off-spinner R Ashwin returned to the side, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, all-rounder Krunal Pandya and opener Shikhar Dhawan were among the notable omissions.
