New coronavirus strain: Mandatory RTPCR test for passengers arriving in Mumbai from Europe, China, Middle East

Following the discovery of a new strain of the Covid-19 virus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) made the RT-PCR test mandatory for international passengers arriving at Mumbai Airport from September 3, 2021.

Passengers from the UK and the rest of Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand and Zimbabwe must undergo an RT-PCR test at their own expense upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai .

The BMC’s guidelines came after the central government issued similar guidelines for international travelers to India in the wake of the new and rapidly spreading strain of the Covid-19 virus. According to the tariff set by the center, passengers will be charged 600 rupees for an RT-PCR test.

In line with the new government guidelines, institutional quarantine for international passengers has been abolished. However, some new guidelines have been introduced for international travelers.

To ensure effective implementation of government-issued protocols, Mumbai Airport’s operating system has put in place adequate provisions for RT-PCR testing of passengers. The airport has increased its capacity to test around 600 passengers per hour.
