No rational explanation given for UK’s quarantine rule for vaccinated Indians: Shashi Tharoor

Congressman Lok Sabha Shashi Tharoor announced on Monday his decision to cancel his upcoming trip to the UK because of the country’s revised quarantine rules for Indians.

The UK government said that anyone vaccinated in Africa, South America, the United Arab Emirates, India, Turkey, Jordan, Thailand or Russia is considered “unvaccinated”. These travelers are required to undergo mandatory quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in the UK.

“Quarantining fully vaccinated Indians is insulting.” Tharoor had said in a tweet on Monday.

Speaking to India Today about his decision, Shashi Tharoor said ten-day quarantine for a fully vaccinated person like him was not only inconvenient but also a waste of time.

“Double standard is absolutely breathtaking”

“If it was a different country, they might have had a little more understanding, but the UK uses the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which the Serum Institute in Pune makes itself and which we call Covishield,” says Shashi Tharoor.

He added, “If the British are branding Covishield, how can they say that one set of vaccinations is accepted and another is not and you must be quarantined. This kind of double standard is absolutely breathtaking. “.”

Shashi Tharoor called it “disgraceful behavior” by the UK government and said the policy was being reviewed in the UK.

“In my private life I hear that they do not distrust the vaccination, but rather the documentation. As one person told me, we believe that your country is a fake certificate for everything,” Shashi Tharoor India said today.

Lawmakers, who is also the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on IT, said vaccination certificates in India contain QR codes that can be shared with officials at overseas airports for the purpose of authentication.

“Hope the discriminatory policy is withdrawn”

Even the UAE is on the list despite having shown an exemplary vaccination program, Shashi Tharoor said.

He added that there had been talks on improving Indo-UK relations after Brexit. “But these are not the right signals,” added the congressman.

“There is no question that it is [UK’s revised policy] is discriminatory, especially because no rational explanation has been given as to why the Indian vaccine is unacceptable, especially given that it is the same vaccine that the majority of UK citizens are taking. ” Shashi Tharoor said India Today.

The UK knows what it is like to be at the end of discriminatory policies, he said, referring to the US ban on vaccinated travelers from the UK.

Tharoor also said the UK government’s review of vaccinated Indian rules will be completed by the first week of October and he hopes this discriminatory policy will be withdrawn.
