The Delhi Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to accept subpoenas of the Secretary General of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira, from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a Money laundering case in connection with an alleged coal fraud in West Bengal.

The court has set September 27th as the next hearing date and has asked ED to respond to the plea by TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife within three days.

Abhishek Banerjee and Rujira Banerjee, who were asked by the agency to appear in person in front of her in Delhi on Tuesday, along with extensive documents, have claimed that they are residents of Calcutta and should not be forced to join the investigation in the state capital.

The ED disagreed with the plea that money laundering had national and transnational implications and that its investigation was not limited to one police station or area.

According to ED officials, companies affiliated with Rujira Banerjee are said to have received illegal money. The investigators believe that the money could be part of the proceeds from the crime. She also allegedly received money in two of her overseas bank accounts – one in Thailand and one in London.

Rujira’s husband Abhishek Banerjee is the nephew of the TMC Supremo and the West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee.
