Shardul Thakur came up with a counterattacking masterclass on Thursday as he helped India to a respectable first innings on day one of the 4th Test against England in the oval. Shardul hit 57 of just 36 balls while sewing a 63-run stand in just 48 balls with Umesh Yadav after India’s big guns failed to make it to the party in London.

Shardul Thakur hit fifty on his third six and drew Chris Woakes to the mid-wicket bleachers. Thakur celebrated his 2nd Test with much boasting as he waved his racket into the locker room, which stood up to applaud the all-rounder’s valiant performance.

With the 31-ball fifty, Shardul Thakur broke Ian Botham’s record for the fastest fifty in England. Botham had reached the landmark in 1986 with 32 balls in the oval. Notably, it was also India’s second fastest fifty in a friendly.

Kapil Dev holds the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian batsman. He hit a 30-ball fifty against Pakistan in Karachi in 1982.
