In Mathura, Western Uttar Pradesh, many children have been diagnosed with a new mysterious fever identified as scrub typhoid.
Mathura Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rachna Gupta said 26 children were sick in the village of Koh, while in Piproth, Ral and Jasoda there were three, 14 and 17. Ten people, including eight children, have reportedly died in the region.
Infections and deaths have also been reported in other western UP districts such as Agra, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etah and Kasganj. Medical teams collect samples from these areas.
HOW IT SPREADS
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bush typhus, also called bunch typhus, is caused by a bacterium called. caused Orientia Tsutsugamushi. The infection is transmitted to humans through bites from infected chiggers (larval mites).
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Symptoms usually begin within ten days of the bite and include fever, runny nose, headache, body and muscle aches, mood changes, enlarged lymph nodes, and rashes.

According to the CDC, there is no vaccine to prevent typhus. The organization recommends avoiding contact with those affected. It also warns against traveling to bushy areas, where bush typhus is common and where many plants, vegetation, and squirrels can be found.
The CDC advises people to dress children in clothes cover the arms and legs, or cover the cot, stroller and baby carrier with a mosquito net. It also urges them to treat clothing and equipment with 0.5% permethrin as it kills chiggers.
