Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga announces retirement from all forms of cricket


Lasith Malinga Malinga had already ended his ODI and testing career and by announcing his decision to step down from T20 cricket, the 38-year-old marked his retirement from all cricket.

Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Tuesday, ending an excellent 16-year international career that began in 2004. Malinga had already ended his Testing (2011) and ODI (2019) careers and announced his decision to move away from T20 cricket, the 38-year-old has marked his retirement from all forms.

Malinga played 30 Tests, 226 ODIs and 84 T20Is for Sri Lanka, selecting 546 wickets (101 in Tests, 338 in ODIs and 107 in T20Is) in various formats. He is still the leading wicket taker in the shortest format in international cricket and the first to complete a century of scalps in T20Is.

“Today is a very special day for me because I want to thank everyone who has supported and blessed me during my T20 career.

“I want to thank the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and my team members. I want to thank the Mumbai Indians Cricket Team and team members, especially the owners and officials, Melbourne Stars, Kent Cricket Club, Rangpur Riders, Guyana Warriors, Maratha Arabians and Montreal Tigers .

“I gained a lot of experience playing with all of you. I want to share my experience with young cricketers in the future,” said Lasith Malinga in a video posted on social media.

Considered the greatest T20 bowler of all time, Malinga was also an IPL legend and is still the most successful bowler in the history of the tournament with 170 wickets in 122 games for Mumbai Indians.

Malinga led the Sri Lankan T20 team to victory in the 2014 World Cup and is the only bowler to have shot 4 wickets in 4 balls in a row twice in international cricket. Malinga is also the only bowler to have scored three ODI hat tricks and two in T20I cricket.
