T20 World Cup: MS Dhoni a calming influence and very important resource to the leadership group, says L Balaji

Former Indian fast bowler and bowling coach for the Chennai Super Kings, Lakshmipathy Balaji, said MS Dhoni would be a welcome addition to the Indian leadership group at the T20 World Cup.

Speaking to indiatoday.in, Balaji said that Dhoni’s role as mentor of the team will only benefit Captain Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri as India wants to end the 7-year wait for a major ICC trophy.

On Wednesday, Dhoni was named mentor of India for the T20 World Cup as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-person squad for the marquee tournament starting October 17 in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

“I’m very happy. India needs him (Dhoni) at big tournaments. In the recent past there has been a question since 2013,” said Balaji.

“We haven’t won any major tournaments in the recent past, so you needed someone who could bring in a bit of calm, leadership and decision-making skills. I think the appointment of MS Dhoni is very important to Team India.”
In a short tournament like the World Cup, his quick influence in the locker room will be crucial.

“Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri will definitely benefit from this. MS Dhoni has had a huge impact on white ball cricket. Be it as a captain, be it as a guide for the youngsters. In big tournaments and big moments you need someone like MS Dhoni that adds a bit of serenity.

“We saw it in Australian cricket. People like Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting have helped the team in Ashes in the past.

“Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri will benefit from Dhoni’s intuitive on-site decision-making. He also helped transform Virat himself, Rohit Sharma and R. Ashwin. MS will have a huge impact, especially when we have a cadre full of talent. This type of cadre needs to be justified by the leadership group. “

MS Dhoni was one of the most successful captains in India. During his tenure as captain of the team, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy – an unprecedented ICC Trophy hat trick for the captain.

L Balaji believes that leadership is no longer just about one person in professional cricket, and Dhoni’s calming influence will be a welcome addition to India’s leadership group. Balaji pointed out that India has stalled in the knockout stages of major tournaments and Dhoni’s experience of going through ups and downs in major tournaments is sure to contribute to better decision-making in the UAE.

India reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Championship in 2016 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. After taking rule from Dhoni, Virat Kohli has led India to several major victories, but the ICC trophy has eluded the influential Indian captain.

Dhoni is very good at making intuitive decisions: balaji

“Leadership these days consists of several roles. It cannot be a man. So Dhoni’s presence and identity are enormous. There is always preparation when it comes to pre-game and post-game meetings. But MS Dhoni brings decisions with her.” in the present, he is way ahead of the others.

“When it comes to World Cups, making the right decisions at the right time makes a big difference. Maybe you have a bad day and the chance is over. All of those little things make a big difference.”

“So you need someone who’s been through all of this. You can’t win trophies without that. There has to be a certain science and skill to do that that India needs at the World Cup.

“Right now everyone is thinking about why this (India wins major trophies) isn’t happening, so MS Dhoni is probably the right person to offer advice.

“He is seen as an additional resource for the Indian leadership group.

“Indian cricket has done well. We won test series in Australia, we did well in bilateral series, so MS Dhoni’s influence should be maximized to influence young players and turn the established boys into match winners on big days. It can ‘be taught, but if you have the right leader in the locker room.

“Everyone will benefit from the calming influence dhoni will have in the locker room,” added Balaji.

India begins its campaign against arch rivals Pakistan on October 24th and will face New Zealand and Afghanistan together with two qualified teams in the Super 12 phase.
