Ahead of next year’s Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, peasant unions are attempting to penetrate the Purvanchal area to raise awareness of the three controversial farm laws and to fight the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of the protesting peasant unions, held a panchayat on Tuesday in the Sahjanwa area of Gorakhpur, the bastion of the Prime Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, and requested one Bharat Bandh on September 27th.

“With the implementation of these three agricultural laws, the BJP opens the gates for the privatization of the farm. Small and medium-sized farmers make up 82 percent of the total farming community, and by privatizing agriculture, the government will marginalize these smallholders for the next five years, ”said Atul Anjan, general secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha.

“The land of such farmers will eventually go to large corporations and farmers will become slaves to corporations. Almost 70 percent of the youth in our country are dependent on farms. This will be catastrophic not only for farmers but also for the country, ”said Atul Anjan.

The leaders of the farmers’ union also urged locals not to vote for the BJP in the upcoming state elections.

“We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the BJP gets a taste of defeat in the upcoming general election. If the three new farm laws are not reversed, we will continue our nationwide campaign against the BJP, ”said Prabal Pratap Shahi, spokesman for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Asali).

“We also want a guarantee on the MSP. The farmers are suffering and the government’s strategy is to make them suffer even more by giving their land to private players, ”said Shahi.

Many farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are protesting against the three new farm laws in the last 10 months on the borders of Delhi and other parts of the country.
