US federal aviation declares Kabul airport ‘uncontrolled’

Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul has been declared “uncontrolled” by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A NOTAM (Notam to Airmen) was issued on Wednesday declaring Kabul airport “uncontrolled”.

“Afghanistan FIR [flight information region] is an uncontrolled class G airspace, “the FAA said in NOTAM, which was released on Wednesday.

“All aircraft arriving or departing from Kabul Airport (OAKB) must have an approved flight plan at least 24 hours in advance,” the statement said.

According to FAA, “A NOTAM is a message that contains information that is important to the affected personnel with flight operations, but not known far enough in advance to be publicized in any other way. It indicates the abnormal status of a component of the National Airspace System (NAS), not its normal status.

A similar notice was last issued on August 30, when the last American flight left Kabul airport minutes before the August 31 deadline.

The notice stated that “no air traffic control or airport services are available”.

“Aircraft operating in, out of or through Kabul FIR and landing OAKB should exercise extreme caution.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan after capturing the capital, Kabul, on August 15 The US completed its military withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 30th after a huge but chaotic airlift that ended almost 20 years of war in the country.
