Why a holy Hindu is buried and not cremated like a common Hindu

Unlike ordinary Hindus, sadhus or the holy Hindus are not cremated, but bhoo-samadhi (burial) are given. It is believed that the cremation of the body of a holy Hindu is not necessary as he does not capture the atman (soul).

Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad President Mahant Narendra Giri, who died by suicide, was given bhoo-samadhi (burial). The common practice of the Hindus for the last rites of the dead is cremation.

Sadhus, or the holy Hindus, are an exception when they die. The Hindus believe in the existence of Atman (soul), which wanders after the death of the body.

It is also believed that complete transmigration of souls occurs when the Atman is free from all attachments acquired during a person’s life cycle. At death the body dies, but the atman can continue to hold onto attachments until the remains exist in physical form.

Hindus believe that cremation of the body completely destroys worldly attachment and paves the way for liberating Atman from earthly needs.

A samyasi, or holy Hindu, attains the sacred position only after giving up all worldly attachments and joys. When a holy Hindu dies, it is believed that the Samyasi leaves the physical body and attains eternal immortality through an after death process called Kapala Moksha. This is based on the belief that the praan (life force) of a holy Hindu leaves the body through Brahma-randhra (a divine passage).

Since the body of a holy Hindu does not include Atman, its cremation is not required. The transmigration of souls from Atman happens without the body having to be destroyed. This is why a holy Hindu is buried and not cremated like an ordinary Hindu when he leaves for a heavenly abode.
