Will wait and watch before recognising Taliban govt, says Russian Ambassador to India | Exclusive


In an exclusive interview with India Today, Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev said Russia “will wait and see” before it does Taliban government in Afghanistan. He also noted that terrorism was a cause for concern.

Russia is one of the few nations who kept their embassy in Kabul open despite the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan. Towards the end of August, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman announced that Russia’s position vis-à-vis the Taliban government would depend on how it behaves towards the Afghan people and towards Russian diplomats.

Under the presidency of India UN Security Council adopted resolution on August 30, the Taliban called on them to keep their promise to allow people to leave Afghanistan freely. It was passed with 13 votes in favor and no objection, but both China and Russia abstained.

ON THE LOCATION IN AFGHANISTAN

On the conflict between the Taliban and local resistance forces in Panjshir ProvinceRussian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev told India Today that he would not comment on the “internal affairs” of Afghanistan. “The northern front has sought negotiations. Let’s see,” he said.

Regarding the humanitarian crisis in the country, Nikolay Kudashev stated that the United Nations Secretary-General had called a meeting on September 13 to discuss the same. “It should be discussed there,” he said.

He criticizes the US and said the global superpower has abandoned the people and the country. “It is time for the foreign occupation to end and the Afghans to build their own nation,” said the ambassador.

The United States completed the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan on August 31st. End of a hasty evacuation mission and a 20-year war.

ABOUT INDIA-RUSSIA RELATIONS

Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev told India Today that India and Russia must work together to ensure stability in the region.

“Security, predictability and stability in the region is what we want,” he said.

The annual BRICS summit, which will be attended by both India and Russia, will take place virtually on September 9th. The BRICS member countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
