3 hikers die after heavy snowfall lashes Himachal’s Kinnaur; ITBP rescues 10

Heavy snowfall in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh resulted in the deaths of three hikers on Saturday 23 October. The trio was part of a group of 13 who had set out from Janglikh in Rohru, Shimla, to Sangla, Kinnaur.

Employees of the Indo-Tibetan border police managed to rescue 10 men who are stuck at the Buran Pass in Kinnaur – at an altitude of 4,696 meters above sea level. The group had managed to reach the Buran Pass but were unable to advance due to the heavy snowfall in the area.

The deputy commissioner of Kinnaur Apoorv Devgn said the bodies of the three deceased hikers were buried under a meter of snow.

Officials from the district administration said they obtained the information about the group stuck at Buran Pass by calling 112. Nine of the 10 hikers came from Mumbai and one from New Delhi.

TWO HIKERS MISSING

In another incident, two hikers leaving Harsil, Uttarkashi for Kinnaur were reported missing from Lamkhaga, Kinnaur.

A search and rescue operation for the missing hikers will be launched on Monday as the helicopters were unable to take off on Sunday due to bad weather.
