Police in Bangladesh exposed Iqbal Hossain’s involvement in the violence after analyzing CCTV footage retrieved from surveillance cameras in the pandal.
CCTV footage retrieved by police clearly shows Iqbal taking a copy of the Quran from a mosque and walking to the Durga Puja venue. He was later seen with a club held by a statue of Lord Hanuman.
Comilla SP Farooq Ahmed also said the defendant Iqbal Hossain is a “drifter” and has yet to be taken into custody.
Iqbal’s brother and other family members who suspect someone may have taken advantage of their state of mind also help the police track them down.
Comilla police have filed four cases and made 41 arrests related to the violence that broke out during a Durga puja pandal in the city earlier this month. Four of those arrested are said to be employees of Iqbal Hossain.
Iqbal’s mother, Amena Begum, told the Dhaka Tribune that he has been a drug addict and has faced mental health problems since he was stabbed in the stomach by neighbors about 10 years ago.
At least three people were killed as community tensions gripped Bangladesh after a copy of the Quran was found at the Pandal Nanua Dighir Par Durga Puja in Comilla last week.
